Lawyers must be able to take in a great deal of information, often on topics about which they are unfamiliar. The ability to digest information from lengthy, dense texts is essential. Equally important is the ability to listen to clients and understand their unique issues and concerns.
the lawyer need to know what your client is aiming for in a wider way than just what they have asked you to do for this transaction it helps the process along if they don’t need to explain their aims at every turn, since it means you can put the options they’re most likely to prefer first in discussions and so on. It also helps to understand what everyone else involved in the case or transaction is aiming for, whether it’s so that you can pre-empt their arguments in a case or predict in advance what the likely outcome of negotiations will be.
A good lawyer will possess an inquisitive nature. Curiosity drives a person to probe and ask revealing questions. The inquisitive attorney will peel back the layers of a case, going deeper, asking for more information.
This skill is important because it's often the small, unnoticed details that can make or break a case. A good lawyer asks questions because they aren't satisfied with accepting surface information. They know there may be more facts underneath the evidence presented. Their inquisitive nature will push them to uncover that information.
Symptomatic Reading- Attorneys will have to read a great deal of material when they take on a client. It may be court documents, witness testimony, contracts, case law, or a myriad of other text. It is easy for anyone to skim over the information and take it at face value. Unfortunately this can prove detrimental to a client.
The very top lawyers are not only logical and analytical, but they display a great deal of creativity in their problem solving.
The best solution is not always the most obvious and in order to outmanoeuvre your challenger it is often necessary to think outside .the box
Being a lawyer is an honor, responsibility and a livelihood. In that order. No Reverse Sort. These have been for centuries. Technology, glamor, paraphernalia lawyers do best, only the best lawyers marketed; but not always the result is a satisfied customer.
The job of a lawyer is to achieve the best outcome for his client within the justice and law. In that order. the other lawyers can be called, but only that they are operators of the law.
That's not clear that the lawyer should always be a man of his time and make use of technology as a work item (as in his time mail or telegraph were used); but not as a requirement to practice law and justice.
I would add marketing skills (as for any business) and knowledge management awareness. Beyond a certain point in your career, general management skills are required (in particular people development, coaching, etc.)
